JOB DESCRIPTION

At Praecipio Consulting, the Support Engineer is an integral part of the team, responsible for ensuring that applications continue to operate smoothly. As part of the Software Development team, you will be tuning, updating, and upgrading existing applications, performing security reviews and updates, and working directly with clients to resolve issues and implement new features. You will be working in a fast-paced and highly collaborative environment with other highly skilled software developers to build and maintain world-class software solutions.

Our ideal candidate is a fast learner with excellent communication skills and has experience in the following disciplines:

  • Backend Development - Rails, Node.js preferred; Python, Java, a bonus
  • Frontend Development - JavaScript, CSS, HTML, JQuery, React preferred
  • DevOps / Continuous Integration
  • Agile Software Development (Kanban, Scrum, or similar)
  • Unit testing / Integration testing

Project responsibilities, commensurate with experience and aptitude, may include:

  • Supporting existing software applications, diagnosing problems, and resolving issues
  • Monitoring production applications and investigating exceptions and alerts
  • Managing incoming tickets, queues, and related client communication
  • Software development, design, and testing
  • Analyzing requirements and translating into elegant, scalable, performant code
  • Communicating and interacting with customers
  • Working with clients to understand issues and requests
  • Deployment and management of complex software solutions
  • Performing clear and concise software demos
  • Contributing to and following software development standards and guidelines
  • Performing code reviews and soliciting feedback from others 
  • Documentation for both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Assisting with scripts, application configuration

REQUIREMENTS

  • University degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, or related field of study or five years experience in software development or related field
  • Working familiarity with the following:
    • Software development (5+ years professional experience)
    • APIs, REST, JSON, and HTTP Communication
    • Application deployment and monitoring
    • Agile development management practices
    • Experience working as part of a team
    • Experience working directly with customers

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

The primary responsibility of the Support Engineer will be to support existing applications that have been developed by Praecipio Consulting. The ideal candidate will have the skills necessary to diagnose problems with running applications and to implement fixes and new features within these applications. 

Additional responsibilities include implementing tests, performing verification, working with quality assurance on verification of changes, and assisting with the deployment of client-facing applications. You will interact directly with clients in order to obtain the necessary information with which to understand reported issues and feature requests and to demonstrate working software. 

In addition, in this role you will have the opportunity to work closely with the application development team in the development of new applications, providing input on developing highly supportable software, and contributing to these projects in various capacities.

These are helpful skills to have:

  • Backend Technologies (one or more with eagerness to learn others): Node.js, Ruby / Rails, Python, Java
  • Frontend Technologies (JavaScript, HTML 5 / CSS 3, (React.js, Angular, JQuery)
  • An understanding of relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle, Microsoft SQL)
  • Prior experience working with software support environment a plus
  • Working knowledge of software version control systems such as Git, Subversion, Perforce, and/or Mercurial
  • Familiarity with CI/CD (Bitbucket Pipelines, Bamboo, Jenkins, GitHub Actions)
  • Experience with cloud hosting platforms (Heroku, AWS, Microsoft Azure)
