Atlassian DC End of Life Announced. Here's What We Know

Written by Praecipio | Sep 9, 2025 2:31:30 PM

Atlassian has announced that Data Center products will officially reach end of life on March 28, 2029, at 11:59 p.m. PST. For organizations that have built their operations on Jira, Confluence, and other Atlassian tools in Data Center, this news may feel surprising. While many customers have already started the shift to cloud, there are still many who are relying on on-prem deployments.

At Praecipio, we understand that this is more than just a product announcement. It’s a significant change that will require careful planning, resources, and strategic decision-making for your organization.

Why Atlassian Is Making This Move

The shift has been in motion for years and Atlassian’s vision has been clear: cloud is the future. In fact:

  • Adoption is already the norm. Nearly 99% of Atlassian customers are already using or moving to the cloud, and 75% of enterprises and regulated organizations now have a footprint there.

  • Proven performance gains. After migrating, customers report up to 300% ROI through consolidation and efficiency, with teams delivering value up to 80% faster.

  • Enterprise readiness. Atlassian has invested heavily in security, compliance, and scale to ensure even the most complex, regulated organizations can thrive in the cloud.

  • AI at scale. As artificial intelligence reshapes industries, Atlassian sees cloud as the only way to deliver cutting-edge innovation effectively.

The Transition Timeline

Atlassian won’t turn off the lights on DC overnight, however. They've provided a three-year runway for customers to plan their transition:

  • March 30, 2026: New DC license sales and new marketplace app license sales will cease.

  • March 30, 2028: License sales, user count expansions, and marketplace app sales to existing customers will cease.
  • March 28, 2029: Data Center reaches full end of life and will no longer be supported.

That means now is the time to begin conversations, assess your options, and create a roadmap that works for your business. This is especially true if you anticipate needing a bigger user tier after March 30, 2028.

What About Fastshift?

Atlassian's Fastshift program works best when you're also engaged with a Solution Partner to provide the hands-on-keyboard support that's often required with complex migrations. If your organization still resides on Atlassian DC today, this is likely to be the case.
